CROYDON sports and community groups have welcomed the reopening of Keystone Hall after the completion of a $306,000 facelift.
The works include an improved courtyard, new office space and toilets, three 3000-litre water tanks linked to toilets for flushing, refurbished kitchen and kiosk and upgrades to the hall's facade and surrounds. They were unveiled last Friday by Mayor Alex Makin and Deakin MP Mike Symon.
"These works are the product of a solid partnership between the council, the Federal Government, Town Park Committee of Management and Croydon Little Athletics Centre," Cr Makin said.
"This is great news for hall users, who I'm sure will enjoy the revamped facilities on offer."
Croydon Little Athletics Centre acting president Peter Major said the works were of great benefit to the wider community.
"The one thing that held Croydon [Little Athletics Centre] back in terms of holding larger and multi-centre events was the canteen and the toilet because they weren't big enough and most of the time didn't work.
"We also have a two-week trial period for athletes. They can choose to stay on with the club or move on somewhere else, and we would often lose families.
"When we rang them up to see if they would join, what came through quite strongly was the toilet facilities because, quite frankly, they were disgusting."
Mr Major said the hall was used frequently by community groups, including Croydon U3A and the Croydon Cricket Club.
Mr Symon said the works were a substantial improvement to Keystone Hall and its landscaping.
The project was funded by the council ($150,000), the Federal Government ($150,000) and Town Park Committee of Management ($6000).
