Building on green dream pays off

08 Jun, 2010 05:00 AM
AT first glance, the home of Antoni and Jo Pisa may not seem all that different from others in The Basin.

But take a closer look, and you will find a home that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The family took some of its inspiration from Mr Pisa's work on Australia's first five-star Green Star project - the refurbishment of 500 Collins Street in Melbourne's CBD.

As a result, their green home was designed to stay warm in winter and cool in summer, with no need for air-conditioning.

There are double glazed windows, an underground water tank and compact fluorescent lighting.

For not much more than $400,000, the family have built what Mrs Pisa calls their dream home.

She said the family did a lot of research before they actually got to work.

"Some people think when you say you're building a sustainable home that you're living in the trees. But it's a normal family home."

Any doubts that some sceptics may have about a green friendly home delivering a financial benefit have been put to rest, with the savings continuing since the Pisas moved in.

"It's made a huge difference to our power bills. We are spending the same amount we used to when we were in a two-bedroom unit, and now we're in a four-bedroom house with a study."

Antoni and Jo, along with their two kids, spend about $40 each quarter on gas and $180 each quarter on electricity. They restrict their water use to 304 litres a day.

The Pisas will show off their home as part of The Basin Sustainable House Tour on June 19. Details: 92988000.
