LILYDALE Heights College is keeping students on target with a lunchtime darts club.
Teacher and darts enthusiast John Plucinski started the club four and a half years ago with six donated boards and equipment from the Maroondah Social Darts Club.
It now runs two lunchtimes each week for both male and female students.
Plucinski has also played a pivotal role in running local inter-school darts competitions against neighbouring schools and sending Lilydale Heights students to the Victorian junior darts championships.
In the past two years the school has boasted several winners.
Student Brooke Taylor won a gold medal in female junior doubles in 2010 and scored a silver medal in singles.
Daniel Crowe won a silver in triples in the same year. Last year Jakob Barr brought home the gold medal in doubles.
Mr Plucinski said it was difficult to attract students to the club but he was continuing to promote it around his school. "It's hard to get the message out," he said.
"I know there's plenty of families that play darts at home but the kids don't realise there is the possibility of competitions at school.
"Most sports like basketball or football have inter-school levels, regional, district, zone, state competitions, but not darts. That's what I'm trying to get going."
Mr Plucinski said he took the most pleasure from seeing students improve their accuracy along with their numeracy. "We've found that their maths has improved. They have to add scores like triple 18 and double 12 and add that together and take it away from their score already."
