STEP into the garden of Kerry Davis and you find a world of beautiful plants and native wildlife.
Mr Davis's Knoxfield garden will be on show this week as part of Australia's Open Garden Scheme.
Although he maintains a wonderful garden, water conservation is among Mr Davis' top priorities.
He uses only native plants in his front garden. They are able to withstand long dry periods, and have not been watered for 19 years.
A dry creek bed and dry pond is included and planted around with contrasting foliage plants.
Mr Davis said the rear garden featured a classic three-trunk silver birch, which provided welcoming shade during the hot months.
"This garden contains a fernery, a small vegetable patch, rose gardens and a native section for wildlife."
Mr Davis said the fernery included a pond and hollow logs which attracted lizards and frogs.
"It's planted out with ferns, native orchids and Australian plants that require some moisture. In summer, the fernery receives about five minutes watering twice a week."
Mr Davis's rose garden provides colour, with native plants along the back fence providing a habitat for small birds.
Mr Davis's garden at 4 Rickards Ave, Knoxfield, will be open 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry: $6.
