ASIAN language studies at Yarra Valley Grammar have been given an $18,000 grant from the federal government.
The incentive is aimed at increasing the number of young Australian students skilled in Asian languages.
The Ringwood school will use the money to develop a new Chinese program.
This will include the creation of an iPad application for students to learn Mandarin.
The school's Chinese language teacher Will Harper said while there was an abundance of innovative language resources for university students, there weren't many for middle school students that would encourage them to continue their language studies.
"We are hoping that by creating innovative resources for year 7 students to learn the Chinese language they will want to continue with the subject in their older years of schooling."
Mr Harper said staff and students were excited at the prospect.
And as the only Chinese teacher at the school, he looked forward to creating more information technology based resources to keep students immersed.
"There has already been great interest in the program. Next year there will two year 7 classes learning Chinese as opposed to one."
Deakin federal MP Mike Symon said the grant would allow the school to expand its innovative Asian language program.
"Giving our students the opportunity to develop Asian language skills can be a big boost to their opportunities and help our community gain from engagement with our closest neighbours," he said.
More than $2.8million will be divided among 190 schools to promote the teaching and learning of Asian languages.
