A MAN wanted over an shooting and aggravated burglary in New South Wales has been extradited from Melbourne after being arrested in Croydon last week.
Heavily armed officers from the Victoria Police armed crime taskforce and special operations group swooped in on a house about 10.30am on Thursday as part of a carefully orchestrated operation.
David Wootton, 27, was arrested without incident and taken to the St Kilda Road police complex for questioning. NSW police allege he shot a man in the head and was also linked to sex crimes.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said police were led to the Plymouth Road property after receiving intelligence from NSW police that Wootton was staying at a friend's house with a male and female, believed to be his brother and girlfriend. He said the situation ended peacefully.
In an out-of-sessions hearing at the Melbourne Custody Centre that night, the court heard that Wootton, of Woodford, NSW, fired the shot during an aggravated burglary at a Blue Mountains home on August 22, injuring a 32-year-old man. Wootton was arrested for an outstanding apprehension warrant in relation to sex-related offences.
During the raid, nearby schools Luther College and Good Shepherd Lutheran Primary School were in lockdown. In a statement released on the Luther College website, principal Michael Kleidon said both schools were shut down for about 75 minutes until police declared the situation to be safe.
"The schools were alerted by police about 10am this morning that they were attending to an incident across the road from both schools.
"While the schools were not aware of the exact nature of the incident, it was decided that prudent action was to hold all students and staff within the school building for their safety."
