PEOPLE who've watched TV cop shows and fancied the idea of joining the force can take the first step this weekend.
A recruitment information day at the Victoria Police Academy offers aspiring rookies the best chance of joining the force, and age is no bar.
Potential candidates will converge from all over the state at the Glen Waverley academy
to chat with regular officers and members from the dog squad, critical incident response team and the mounted branch.
Besides tours and fitness demonstrations, officers will operate a 'scenario village' and put on a weapons display.
Leading Senior Constable Martin Buzzell of the Maroondah highway patrol said one of the most unique aspects of the profession was its versatility.
"It's a really diverse profession in that if you aren't enjoying the area you are working in you can change to a whole different division," he said.
Leading Senior Constable Buzzell has been on the Maroondah beat for more than 15 years.
"Getting in to traffic collision investigation is something I'd always wanted to do," he said. "No two days are ever the same in a job like this."
One of the biggest myths Acting Senior Sergeant Jenelle Kelly wants to bust is about the minimum age someone can apply to join.
"For us as recruiters, it's not so much about the age of the person. It's about their skills and the whether they have the inherent capabilities of policing," she said.
Potential trainees are put through their paces with an entrance exam, a fitness test and a good character test. The recruiting information day starts at 10am on Sunday. The academy is in Viewmount Road, Glen Waverley. Registration is essential. For more information, visit policecareer.vic.gov.au/police/ap ply/events.
