RINGWOOD'S Jonas Bahlo, who celebrates his second Father's Day on Sunday, is beaming as he looks at the ultrasound image of his second daughter, due to be born in a few months.
But he admits it is a strange feeling that the much-longed-for child is being grown hundreds of kilometres away, thanks to a friend who has agreed to act as a surrogate for Mr Bahlo and his wife Patricia Lissel.
The Journal first reported on the couple last December after the State Government passed new legislation to improve access to surrogacy in Victoria.
Ms Lissel had a hysterectomy when she hemorrhaged following first daughter Narelle's birth about 20 months ago, and in May expressed her Mother's Day wish for her surrogate to fall pregnant following the implantation of one of the couple's embryos.
Mr Bahlo, a teacher at Mooroolbark College, said last week: "If this is the only way to have a baby sister for Narelle, that's the way we're going to do it.
"From a physical perspective, I've rationalised it. Psychologically, it's just strange you have a kid halfway on the way, but no tummy here."
He said the experience was quite different for his wife too.
"I've been in the birth room before, but this is an out-of-body experience both for Trish and me. I hope it's a happy experience for all of us."
Mr Bahlo spends Tuesdays looking after Narelle and was looking forward to also sharing Father's Day with her.
"We don't make too much of it. It's Mother's Day and Father's Day every day. I'm sure she [Narelle] is going to love me as much on Father's Day as all the other days.
"[But] if we can have the four of us together next year, that'll be even better."
