Sylvia Creek protesters block log truck

22 Aug, 2011 03:13 PM
TWO protesters this afternoon stopped a truck loaded with logs from leaving Sylvia Creek forest near Toolangi north of Healesville.

Police have been called to the Gun Barrel coupe where the two people have locked arms around the truck’s axle.

The coupe has been the site of a month-long series of protests by conservationists and local activists who fear continued logging will wipe out the remaining habitat of the endangered Leadbeater’s possum.

VicForests has stated that no Leadbeater’s possum habitat exists in the area.

Twelve people have so far been arrested in the past month at the coupe.

There are two live leadbeaters nests in coupes earmarked to be logged. Technically, you need 3 hectares of the right type of forest to classify an area as "habitat" for leadbeaters. In the relevant coupe there are only two. Technically, VicForests is right - it is not "habitat" by their standards. But if they log where they plan to, possums will be killed.

Another example of the absurdity of bureaucracy. VicForests is just another Labor business gone wrong, with all the red-tape trappings!
