Website helps disabled people get around

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
MAROONDAH and Yarra Ranges residents with disabilities are now finding it even easier to get around - all with just a click of the mouse.

Residents can review accessibility in their community through a new website, Travelling Chair, and share their experiences on ramps, railings and toilets in public venues.

Disability Action Group Eastern Region chair Woody Marriott said he planned to add many reviews.

"It is a step in the right direction. I would like to see more local places reviewed."

Travelling Chair is linked to Google Maps and its success depends on how many people add reviews to the site.

Mr Marriott said it was important people told the truth when writing a review to let people get out and about with confidence.

"I'm in a scooter and it is frustrating not to be able to open doors properly. Other people may do it for us but we want to do it ourselves to be independent as possible."

Reviews can be added through social media like Facebook and Twitter or contributors can create their own login.

Maroondah's Scoot Wheel 'n' Move member Geoff Panckhurst said he thought the website would be useful to others. He said a venue's access was crucial to anyone with a disability. "I think there was a time when people with disabilities just didn't get out as much as they do now."

Travelling Chair was created by Grit Media through a VicHealth grant in response to a lack of up-to-date online information on accessible venues.
