Yarra Valley Grammar looking at $4m inferno bill

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
STUDENTS returned to Yarra Valley Grammar yesterday as the school counted the cost of a fire that tore through the premises last week.

The blaze broke out in the science block of the school in Kalinda Road, Ringwood, about 7.10pm last Monday.

More than 100 firefighters from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and the CFA fought for nearly two hours to contain the fire.

Principal Mark Merry said the insurance assessors would be inspecting the site soon but he expected the damage to reach $4 million.

He said science faculty members were helping firefighters determine which chemicals were still in the burnt-out science block.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries during the blaze and were treated at the scene by paramedics. The cause of the fire is still being investigated but Dr Merry says it does not appear to have been deliberately lit.

"We are predicting that it was some kind of electrical fault. The school is very resilient. We're coping well and are we are very relieved nobody was seriously injured in the fire."
