Former Upwey student nets European basketball honour

17 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
FORMER Upwey High School student Penny Taylor claimed a major European basketball honour last week.

Taylor, who plays for Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce, was named European Player of the Year by basketball website Eurobasket.com.

The website compiled votes for the award from its 300-strong list of contributing writers.

Fenerbahçe is currently the only undefeated team in Euroleague play (9-0) and Taylor is averaging 17.8 points – which places her fifth in the Euroleague in scoring – and 4.1 rebounds per game.

In the Turkish league, she is averaging 18.5 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. Fenerbahçe sits in first place on an 11-1 record.

Taylor is expected to play a major role in the Australian Opals' quest for gold at the London Olympics in July and August.
