High-flying Hawks fall to Falcons

31 Aug, 2010 12:00 AM
WAVERLEY did the unthinkable - twice - to win the Big V men's basketball championship division against hot favourite Ringwood at the Maroondah Indoor Sports Centre over the weekend.

The Falcons were down a game in the best-of-three finals series and needed to win both Saturday's and Sunday's games.

Not only did the Falcons level the series with a 86-58 victory, they charged to a championship win with a 76-53 victory on Sunday.

The sheer fact that Waverley held Ringwood to its two lowest scores of the season is remarkable. Defence is king and the crown now sits with the Falcons based on exploiting the Hawks via superior defence.

To paint the picture, Ringwood had topped the 100-point mark 12 times this season and landed in the 90s a further nine times. Its previous lowest score of the season was 84 points.

Coming off an 80-91 game one loss, the Falcons came with a nothing-to-lose attitude and rose to the occasion.

Prior to the weekend, the two teams had clashed four times during the season for four Ringwood wins and an average winning margin of 17 points.

Other than Daryl Corletto (17points) and Luke McMillan (11points), no other Hawk hit double figures, again a reflection on Waverley's defence.

To make matters worse, Waverley went on a 21-10 run to close out the game.

Game three was a gripping battle, with Waverley's ability to flood Ringwood's scoring options telling.

Holding a four-point lead going into the last quarter on Sunday, Waverley again stood up and held back Ringwood's stars, claiming the title with a 27-18 run to the final buzzer.

The scoring punch the Hawks are renowned for was again missing, with Corletto (17 points), McMillan (16) and Kevin Ratzsch (12 points, 13 rebounds) the only players ticking the scoreboard over.
