TWO boxers are going for the knock out in state and national championships later this year.
Ed Abel and Arjen Jonker, members of the Lilydale Fight 'n' Fitness Club, won gold medals in the state championships last year.
Abel, of Warbuton, has been boxing for six years, starting when he was at the Lilydale Adventist Academy.
"I started boxing to protect myself, it provides me with a challenge.
"I used to be really nervous days before the fight but now it's only a few hours before but it's what keeps you going."
Abel won the Victorian senior welterweight title last year and came third in the national competition.
The 21yearold will be competing in the state and national titles in November.
"It will be my third time in the nationals so hopefully I can do better than last time.
"I am training three to four times a week and when the tournament gets nearer I'll pick that up with my trainer."
He hopes to become professional if he wins the tournament and had this advice for future stars. "Go to your local gym and train so you know how to look after yourself in the ring."
Jonker is looking forward to the national titles in Geelong.
He has been boxing for only 18 months but has already won the Victorian junior cruiserweight and Australian under 16 cruiserweight titles.
The 16-year-old aims to box in the heavy or light heavyweight category this year.
"I train 10 hours a week and more with my dad, it keeps you keep fit and you feel so good after a fight.
"I enjoy the adrenalin rush you get when your body takes over and you are in the zone."
Jonker also hopes to turn professional in a few years.
The pair have been chosen as our Sports Stars of the Week.
