LAST year, Yarra Valley Cricket Association fell one run short of winning Melbourne Country Week division 3; this year they effectively won the representative competition on a dropped catch.
YVCA 10th-wicket pair Travis Nightingale (31 not out) and Ishara Amarasinghe came together with the YVCA at 9-120 chasing 154 at Balwyn Park last Friday.
The pair got themselves within two runs of victory when Nightingale hit a ball in the air and was dropped by a Colac District Cricket Association player.
The match lasted just two more balls as the pair took a single of each to snare a memorable win.
YVCA will also move up to division 2 for next year's carnival.
YVCA team manager and player Brad Jones said his teammates had their hearts in their mouths throughout the final wicket partnership.
"We were extremely happy, " he said.
"At one stage I didn't think we would win but Trav and Ish got us over the line at the end. It was even better to win a close one after losing last year, ."
While the Victorian Country Cricket League, organisers of the carnival, won't name the man of the competition award until a presentation night later in the year, Jones said YVCA captain Kane Jones and all-rounder Daniel Lever would have strong claims for the award.
"Kane made about 150 runs and took eight wickets for the carnival and Daniel had similar figures but a few less wickets," he said.
The YVCA side, many of whom played in last year's grand final loss, celebrated heartily on Friday night after the game, before backing up to play club cricket on Saturday.
"The best thing about the week was that it was a real team effort - different people did different thing to help us get over the line in certain games," Jones said.
