Foggy day puts dampener on final round

02 Mar, 2010 08:47 AM
DAY one of the final home and away round began with overcast skies and conditions at some venues that was more like an English cricket season.

The heavy mist hanging in the air forced an early halt to matches or even cancellations.

The DJStrachan Shield competition still has final four places up for grabs. Woori Yallock has home side Gruyere District on 3-89, with Aaron Violi undefeated on 32. B Hayes took 1-12 before stumps.

At Yarra Junction the home side is batting first and on 2-60. Daniel Lever has half the tally, being not out on 30.

Both wickets to fall have been taken by Coldstream's A Kuruppuarachahi at the cost of 28 runs.

In the profile match of the round at Queens Park against Warburton, Healesville, with its team-of-the-century weekend of celebration in full swing, is 2-47 off 18 overs.

Seville, playing for fourth place, got almost a full day of play at Hoddles Creek and is 8-306 at stumps.

John Pignataro made his second century for the season with Andrew Kay chipping in with 77.

In the R A Finger Trophy grade, Warburton versus Wandin at Warburton was washed out,

Coldstream was 4-63 at home to Seville (P McArdle 31, Andrew Dipietro 2-21, Roger Oates 1-4 and Matt

Walker 1-19) when play was halted

for the day.

In the C grade 1 competition, Kinglake was to play Gruyere District but the match was called off due to rain and fog.

In the match between Mt Evelyn and Hoddles Creek, Mt Evelyn was 3-57 (Ian Hawkey 31 not out, Ferguson 1-5).

Next Saturday, day two, matches in which play was abandoned on Saturday will be played as one-day games.

The DJSS and RAFT Trophy grades will start semi-final matches on Monday at 12.30pm.
