YARRA Valley Cricket Association's under-14 side learnt the value of clean fielding in its Des Nolan Shield grand final loss to North-West Metro Cricket Association on Sunday.
The YVCA side had gone undefeated to make the grand final of the statewide Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union competition.
YVCA coach Brent Watts said it was a first for the association to have a side in the under-14 final.
Watts said his side dropped three catches and missed two runouts in the first 15 overs as North-West attempted to chase its first innings total of 6-154.
"It was the pressure of the finals," he said.
"The other side batted well but their first two scored 60 of their runs and we dropped both players. If we had taken those catches it would have been different."
North-West ended on 3-156, winning the game in the 37th over.
YVCA batsman Brendan Creedy made his top score for the carnival, scoring 60 not out before retiring as per carnival rules. Tom Kear made 25 runs. Another YVCA player, all-rounder Liam Daley of Healesville, won the player of the competition award after making 278 runs at 55 and taking 10 wickets at 12.
Watts praised his side for making the grand final and performing at such a high level against much bigger associations.
He also commended captain Dermott Fry for his calm head and good decision-making during the carnival.
"At this level you can't really help them with bowlers or fielders, not like in club cricket," Watts said.
"So Dermott did very well with his field placements and decisions."
Watts said a number of YVCA players had progressed to Premier Cricket level from the under-14s.
The YVCA under-16 and under-12 teams weren't able to manage a win across the two weeks of competition but they could consider themselves a little stiff not to secure a win in the last couple of rounds.
The under-16s fell 18 runs short in their round five encounter against local rival Ringwood DCA. The under-12s fell four runs short after batting exceptionally well against West Gippsland CA in their round five clash.
