Premier T20: Ringwood Rams reach for stars

10 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
RINGWOOD captain Ben Osborne wants his side to seize the day when it faces a star-studded Prahran in the Premier Cricket Twenty20 final at Ringwood on Wednesday night.

The young Rams team could face several international level players as Prahran's list includes all-rounder David Hussey, leg spinner Bryce McGain and opening batsman Chris Rodgers.

While the Rams feature former Sri Lankan batsman Michael Vandort, the majority of their side is a mix of emerging players and Premier Cricket veterans.

No matter who fronts up for the Rams, Osborne wants to face Prahran's best side. "I take it as a challenge and I think the rest of the boys do as well," he said.

"It's one thing to say you have won a final but to say we beat players like Hussey, Rodgers and McGain will be something to hang our hats on.

"Hopefully they all play. It will be great for the Ringwood community to see players like that in our area." Hussey's availability depends on his commitments with Big Bash side Melbourne Stars.

The Rams had struggled to win matches at Twenty20 level before this season while struggling to score runs on the wider expanses of their home ground.

"We had to learn that on this very big ground hitting sixes and fours like you see on television doesn't cut it.

"We adjusted, played a smarter way, realised we couldn't hit fours and sixes every ball on our ground. We realised hitting six twos an over will get you 12 runs and 20 overs like that get you a good score."

Osborne said Vandort had found his confidence in Twenty20 cricket after a tough start to the season.

"He really steered us home in our semi-final win," Osborne said.

The Rams tuned up for the final with a one-day win over Camberwell Magpies on Saturday.

Rams openers Vandort (68) and David King (42) put on 84 for the first wicket before keeper-batsman Joe Loorham (90 not out) helped his side to 4-274.

In reply, the Magpies were bowled out for 149 with Michael Topp, Steve Nicholls, Ian Holland and Brendan Walsh all turning two wickets.

Holland is also catching some off-field attention as a contestant on Foxtel's Cricket Superstar television show.
