RDCA: Youngsters lead way in Wonga Park's last-ball win

24 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
WONGA Park has put its faith in its young players and it paid off on Saturday as the teenage tail took the side to a last-ball win over Warranwood in the RDCA Lindsay Trollope Shield.

Teenager Shaun McBride (28 not out) managed to help his side get the remaining runs. Captain Dean Letson (50) praised his side for notching an invaluable win.

The victory sent Wonga Park up to second-last place leading into their two-day clash with fellow struggler Norwood starting this Saturday.

Letson said he believed his young players had the poise to make the runs.

"Our young guys batted well in those last two overs, which were very, very nerve-wracking," he said. "It was like a final for us, given the situation we are in battling relegation. We needed those points, we had a lot of belief they would be able to do it."

Letson also heaped praise of 16-year-old batsman Tom Hancock (61) for his heady play in his first match as the first-drop batsman.

"He batted beautifully," Letson said.

"The level of maturity he showed was fantastic. He has a great head on his shoulders; I can't speak highly enough of his effort."

Letson said his players would take plenty of confidence into the Norwood game.

"To stand up against the level of players Warranwood have will make us much better for the experience."

North Ringwood has gone to the top of the ladder by beating Mooroolbark.

North Ringwood resumed at 1-22 chasing Mooroolbark's 162 and lost two early wickets to be 3-32. Stuart Moore (74 not out) and Matt Stoikos (35) then guided the Bulls to 5-165 to gain first innings points and take over top spot on the Trollope Shield ladder.

With his team trying to protect just 118, Norwood's Josh Holden (5-50) had Croydon North in trouble early at 4-26.

However, an 88-run fifth wicket partnership between Shane Findlay (49) and Chris Noy (45) enabled the Knights to finish on 170.

Norwood batting a second time finished on 2-112 with Brendan O'Riley (47) top-scoring.

Wantirna South won convincingly against East Ringwood. After East Ringwood reached 3-107 chasing 6-313, Drew McKay (6-28) caused carnage against the lower order batsmen to have the Roos lose 7-28 to be all out for 135. Wantirna South batted a second time and was 3-78 at stumps with Wayne Ross (44 not out) top-scoring.

South Croydon resumed at 1-41 chasing Croydon Ranges' 203.

With most Bulldogs batsmen contributing, South lost only five wickets to reel in the total required, finishing at 258. Josh Stewart (50) and Michael King (43) featured with the bat and Blake Smith (3-17) took bowling honours.

South Warrandyte needed the extra overs afforded by Bayswater Park to get over the line.

Chasing the Sharks' 222, Steve Lindsay (58) and David McBride (41) were the mainstays in the Hawks' final score of 8-225.
