MT EVELYN will need to find something special to take any points from its clash with Healesville when day two of their DJ Strachan Shield clash begins this Saturday.
Healesville completely outplayed the out-of-form Mt Evelyn at Queen's Park with the latter winning the toss and getting bowled out for 111. The Bloods managed to pass the total before stumps at 4-139 with Geoff Stock (49) and Mick Sawyer (37) contributing key runs.
Rovers batsmen Gareth Fraser (34) and Luke Jones (26) were the only bats to trouble the Bloods in the early going.
Rovers secretary Mark Schliefert said his side had to lift to avoid any further damage on day two. "This one is a kick in the bum for the boys. Now they need to wake up and get on with the job," he said. "For Healesville this could be a springboard into finals."
Schliefert said Healesville was difficult to slow down when they became confident.
"Our guys didn't make enough runs. We had three or four with starts who then threw their wickets away.
Schliefert said the Rovers needed to bowl the Bloods out quickly if they had any chance of scoring a win on second innings. "Our bowling line-up is pretty strong. If they could run through them in the first hour, then get back out and see if they can put a score on then you never know what could happen.
The Rovers are playing without spinner Aaron Booth, who hurt his back at training last week, but they hope to have him back for their next game.
Warburt on-Millgrove posted a score over 300 for the second week running. Once again it was the hapless Hoddles Creek side that was made to chase leather on the quick Wandin North Reserve.
It was the Burras' top order of Mick Walker (90), Liam Barnard (70) and Tim McKail (50) who provided the backbone of the visitors' 6-358. Damien Egan cashed in at the end with a big hitting 56 not out.
The Wombats' bowling attack was led by the hard working Brenton Derix (3-89) and they will have to bat out of their skins to pull off victory against the consistent Burras' attack.
Silvan seemed to have benefited from the bye and posted a competitive 232 against Woori Yallock. Once again the total was built around classy opener Clint Sharman (110).
Seville batted first against Yarra Junction and posted a competitive 224.
