Silvan breaks its duck

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
SILVAN scored its first win of the Yarra Valley Cricket Association season beating Woori Yallock on Saturday.

Stuart Thompson (4-44), Shane Walliker (3-68) and Matt Neal (3-55) shared the wickets as Silvan defended its day one total of 232, bowling out the Tigers for 184.

Club secretary and first team player Luke Painter said his side was relieved to break its duck after a difficult season without several key players.

"We didn't want to go through [the season] without a win but I think this game had a much bigger impact on the sides fighting for finals places," he said.

The Tigers were in trouble falling to 6-60 before moving within range of the win after Simon Young made a late innings 63.

Painter said Silvan was quietly confident it could add more wins in its final few matches. "We always knew the next two games could be a chance. Hopefully, we can end the season with three in a row," he said.

Warburton-Millgrove consolidated its position at the top of the tree with a commanding victory over Hoddles Creek. Set 359, the Wombats were always going to find the target tough going.

The home side made a good fist of things early against the new ball bowlers with Warwick Weir (63) leading the way, but with the chase falling behind, spinner Tim McKail (5-40) and Scott Darwall (1-8) put the finishing touches to the Burras' victory bowling the Wombats out for 214.

Yarra Junction will rue its missed chance to knock off reigning premier Seville. Set 225, the Eagles looked on target for victory when the top order had them sitting on 3-130 with 40 overs remaining. But the home side lost its last seven wickets for 60 runs as the evergreen Andy Kay (6-31) tightened the screws to bowl the Eagles out for 190.

With Healesville wrapping up first innings points on the first day of its clash against Mt Evelyn, the Bloods started the day 6-139 and looked to build on their overnight lead, but couldn't take full advantage.

With sights still set on victory, the home side removed opener Brad Jones early, but the Rovers dug deep courtesy of captain Kane Jones (101 no) and Troy Hancock (51) and ensured the visitors didn't suffer the shame of an outright loss.

Gruyere's Adam Waixel posted 239 not out, combining with father Neil (54no) to smack Woori Yallock for 1-331 in their RA Finger Trophy clash.
