HEATHMONT claimed the most glorious of grand final victories, beating Glen Waverley Hawks in extra time to claim the Eastern Football League division 4 premiership on Sunday.
The Jets won by seven points, kicking two extra-time goals, including a decisive Mick Aitken goal against the wind.
It was the first EFL senior grand final to go to extra time since 2007 and kept passionate supporters from both clubs on tenterhooks in chilling conditions at Tormore Reserve, Boronia.
Both grand finalists will move into division 3 next season due to Park Orchards' entry into division 4 this season.
Jets coach Steve Buckle praised players on both sides for their efforts in a game that had several twists, including a frantic last-term comeback from the Hawks, who tied the game with the aid of a strong wind.
"It was so tight, neither side deserved to lose the match but I'm so happy it wasn't us," he said.
As the Hawks surged forward they were unable to find a decisive goal or behind in the final minute to snatch victory.
From there the Jets took the ascendancy as they kept the Hawks to just one goal with the breeze in the first five minutes of extra time before Aitken's goal gave them the lead after the change-over siren.
Aitken's goal gave the Jets all the confidence they needed in the last term as they ran out the match and repelled a few desperate Hawks attacks to claim the premiership.
Key forward Daniel Sheen won best-on-ground honours with seven goals. Sheen said the win meant everything as cold conditions and the strong breeze made the going tough.
"It's a massive win for us," he said.
"When we got that goal against the breeze I thought we were home but we had to make sure of it in the last five minutes.
"I didn't expect to get the medal at all. It's a team game and we had lots of good players. I was just happy to get my hands on the ball."
Sheen was joined in the best players by Anthony Hickey, Luke McDermott and Darryn Paul.
Buckle said his players had shown great leadership to pull together in extra time.
"We have some good leaders in the group who would have made sure the players knew what they had to do.
"When Aitken went back for that shot in extra time I wasn't too confident because he had missed a couple of shots from closer in.
"I thought maybe the pressure had got to him but he went back and slotted it.
