SITTING on the bench as the final siren went, Heathmont captain Steve Shore wasn't able to laugh or cry.
With his Jets tied at 81 each with Glen Waverley Hawks, both sides had to go back to their positions and continue the match.
Shore said an Eastern Football League official came over to both benches and told the coaches there would be no time to talk to players before extra time, in which the teams played five minutes each way to decide a winner.
So he wasn't sure how his teammates would respond.
The game was quickly restarted, amidst a strong breeze and fading light at Tormore Reserve, Boronia.
"We didn't know too much about what was going to happen or whether we were going to get a 'five-quarter time' talk or something," he said.
"I think everyone knew that if we could keep them down and then get the breeze we would be OK." The Jets were kicking against the breeze for the first five minutes and, after the Hawks took the lead through a mark and goal from Simon Grasser, managed to keep control of the ball.
A rare attack into the Jets' forward line in the final minute of the first stanza found key forward Mick Aitken with the siren sounding soon after his mark.
Despite the added pressure, he went back and slotted a 45-metre goal to hand the Jets the lead at the changeover.
From there the Jets managed to keep control of the ball and add an extra goal to take the division 4 premiership.
Shore said it was a surreal feeling to hold up the premiership cup after such a battle.
"I can't describe the feelings I have right now," he said. "But I know everyone is looking forward to playing in division 3 next year."
