MOUNT Evelyn will go into the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League division 1 finals full of confidence with a 20-point win over Olinda Ferny Creek at Mount Evelyn on Saturday.
The home team got off to a great start, booting six goals to two in the opening quarter and racing to a 25-point lead by quarter-time.
Both teams traded blows in the second quarter with 13 goals kicked, but it was again Mount Evelyn that had the better of it, booting eight goals to lead by 44 points at half-time.
Olinda began the third term in much better fashion and with increased accountability booted six goals to three to reduce the margin to 26 at the final change.
The clash was a dress rehearsal for Saturday's elimination final and will give both teams an idea of what to expect.
Chris Haworth, Benjamin Farrugia and Michael Smith were the best for Mount Evelyn. Olinda Ferny Creek was well served by Owen Millwood, Garrett McDonald and Owen Raszkiewics.
Meanwhile, Monbulk defeated Warburton Millgrove by 18 points, but that was just a sub-plot, with many hoping for a major milestone for Burras full-forward Scott Muir. Muir ended up with four goals, leaving him stranded on 94 for the season.
It was a close affair all day with Monbulk breaking the game open in the second quarter with a six-goals-to-three term to take an 11-point buffer into the main change.
Healesville defeated Silvan by 45 points, with the loser's inaccuracy in front of goal in the opening term proving to be its downfall.
Upwey Tecoma beat Wandin by 22 points. Upwey was always expected to win this game but had to fight tooth and nail for the victory.
This game never really reached any great highs but it was an enthralling encounter, as the hardness of the contest was great to witness.
After an even first quarter with Wandin leading by just one point, it was Upwey that slowly got on top but by no means in complete control.
Upwey led by just 15 points at the last change and an upset was a distinct possibility, but Upwey held off a gritty Wandin side that will be a huge improver in 2011.
Woori Yallock was too strong for Gembrook with a 37-point victory. Woori Yallock will go into the finals with great confidence after finishing the season on top and beating second-placed Gembrook.
Woori held just a nine-point lead at half-time and it looked like a great second half of football was in store. However, Woori booted five goals to Gembrook's one to stretch its lead to 34 points.
The last quarter was a non-event as neither side scored a major, which didn't concern Woori, as it ended up as comfortable if not convincing winners.
