A CROYDON youth who migrated from Burma to Australia with his family in 2006 is kicking his way to success with his selection for the School Sport Victoria’s state soccer team.
Jerry San Luai Thang Jahau will travel to Nelson Bay, Newcastle, on August 29 with teammates to compete against other states in the School Sport Australia event.
Jerry, a grade 6 pupil at Croydon Primary School, was in shock after hearing his name called as part of the team.
‘‘I was happy, excited — I couldn’t believe it. It’s a world game and my favourite sport. I enjoy playing it with my friends.’’
Jerry, 12, who has played midfield with the Mooroolbark Junior Soccer Club for the past two years, hopes to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, his favourite player, and represent Australia in the Manchester United team.
Jenny Savory, a teacher at Croydon Primary School, said Jerry’s classmates were excited he had made it into the state team. ‘‘They have been fund-raising to help him get to play in Newcastle.’’
