HUNDREDS of locals have turned out to Australia Day festivities at Ringwood Lake today, welcoming new citizens and celebrating our current ones.
Citizen of the year was awarded to Peter Feeney for his contribution to a range of community groups.
Mayor Nora Lamont paid tribute to Mr Feeney’s work over the years.
‘‘Peter has played a key role in a number of community groups over the years, most recently being a driving force behind the Maroondah Healthy Ageing Network and as editor and publisher of the Chatterbox Newsletter,’’ she said.
Up-and-comer Esther Loughnane was awarded the young citizen of the year award for her involvement in local youth programs.
Cr Lamont said like Ms Loughnane, like Mr Feeney showed a commitment to others ahead of herself.
Maroondah Relay for Life was recognised as the community event of the year.
Last year the event raised more than $150,000 for cancer sufferers and this year’s event was on track to raise a similar amount.
