HUNDREDS of people turned up for Australia Day festivities at Ringwood Lake last Saturday, welcoming new citizens and celebrating current ones.
The citizen of the year was awarded to Peter Feeney for his contributions to a range of community groups.
Maroondah mayor Nora Lamont paid tribute to Mr Feeney's work over the years.
"Peter has played a key role in a number of community groups over the years, most recently being a driving force behind the Maroondah Healthy Ageing Network and as editor and publisher of the Chatterbox Newsletter," Cr Lamont said.
Up-and-comer Esther Loughnane was given the young citizen of the year award for her involvement in youth programs.
Cr Lamont said Ms Loughnane, like Mr Feeney, showed a commitment to others ahead of herself.
Maroondah Relay for Life was awarded community event of the year.
Last year the event raised more than $150,000 for people with cancer and this year was on track to raise a similar amount.
