Ringwood pool: council holds its breath

MAROONDAH Council will learn tomorrow if it has been shortlisted for a $15 million federal government grant for Ringwood's new pool Aquanation.

The decision is a significant one, as the council has stated it would have to "reconsider the scope of the project" if funding is not granted.

But Maroondah mayor Nora Lamont said fears the construction of the pool hinged on this decision were unwarranted. "When locals ask me about the pool I say, 'Look, in the end we're going to be having an aquatic centre'," Cr Lamont said.

The council announced in December that construction of Aquanation would be delayed until it secured external funding.

It had previously assured locals the $46.5 million project was fully budgeted for. However, an unexpected $7.9 million local government superannuation liability had thrown plans off track.

The council has applied for a $15 million grant from the Regional Development Australia Fund.

If it is shortlisted tomorrow, it will then compete against other organisations for the funding, which will be announced on July 12.
