A growing trend

Pupils at Village School in Croydon — including Tom, Alyssa and Fiona — are getting hands-on experience in running their own community garden and market. The school has been given a $1000 grant to buy soil and fencing for the garden beds as part of the Coles Junior Landcare Grants. The school runs vegie growing markets during the week, and sundry items are watered daily. Each home-room group has a weekly sustainability lesson that includes environmental science and ongoing attention to animal and garden programs. The children sell food that has been baked at school or at home, and then manage the funds made from the sales.
