Kilsyth: Netballers score a $5.9m centre

ABOUT 2000 local netballers will reap the benefits of a new $5.9 million centre in Kilsyth after the Yarra Ranges Council approved its planning application.

The approval ends a protracted effort by the Lilydale and Yarra Valley Netball Association to upgrade its current courts and buildings.

Cr Len Cox said the new courts were almost 20 years overdue and were "desperately needed".

"Council has been promising the netball association new courts since Yarra Ranges [Council] has been in existence [since 1994]."

The 10 current courts at McDermott Avenue in Mooroolbark are undersized and "dilapidated", according to association president Toni Madden, who said members "couldn't wait" for the opening.

The project will include 12 outdoor courts, lighting on seven courts, landscaping and a new pavilion.

Parking issues will be eased with more than 200 new spaces.

Construction on the project is set to begin in mid-2013.
