Chirnside Park plan on minister's desk

PLANNING strategies for the Chirnside Park Activity Centre now rest with the Planning Minister Matthew Guy for approval.

Yarra Ranges Council last week adopted the amended plans with changes including consideration of a supermarket within the land on Maroondah Highway.

The land is owned by the McMullin Group, which has proposed a 'village' concept for the site incorporating retail, offices, medical suites, serviced apartments and residential sites.

The council decided it would request that an independent panel be appointed to consider submissions received about the McMullin Group proposal.

Speaking at the meeting, Cedric Hordern, a resident of the nearby Chirnside Village, called the McMullin proposal "unjustifiably and unnecessarily excessive".

Concerns have also been raised that the development would create a "fragmented" shopping precinct with Maroondah Highway intersecting the proposed development and the existing Chirnside Park shopping centre.
