Happy trails for BMX bikers in Lilydale

BMX riders of Lilydale, it's time to get back on the saddle - upgrades to the Lilydale BMX track are finally complete.

To celebrate the milestone, the Lilydale BMX Club is hosting an open day next month, giving enthusiasts a great chance to try out the $50,000 upgrade for themselves.

The track was built in 1983 and it was decided about 12 months ago that a total revamp was needed.

Work has included not only modifications to the course but also updates to the drainage, moving light poles and water pipes, and re-laying all the necessary cables.

Lilydale BMX Club vice-president Dean Steele said the result was a modern and competitive track that complied with standards of the Union Cycliste Internationale standards, the sport's international governing body.

"We are excited because it has taken so long," he said.

The project was funded through grants from the state government and Yarra Ranges Council, with sponsorship from Mooroolbark Community Bendigo Bank.

New features include a five-metre-tall start hill with a double stage drop-in.

"The track is more technical," Mr Steele said. "There are multiple lines for younger riders and older riders. We've ensured our 8-14 year old bracket has not been left out. These kids are the future of our sport and we've incorporated a side chute roll-in off our start hill and tried to find a compromise in the way we have shaped our jumps."

Mr Steele said the only other track within the shire was in Kilsyth and riders were coming from places like Healesville to use the Lilydale track.

He said the club had talented riders and, with the new track to train on, there were a few setting their sights on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

"Our riders are just raring to get out there and give this track a go."

The club trains from 6.30pm every Wednesday and has two club races a month. An open meet is coming up in October. The track will be open to the public at all other times.

The open day is on Saturday, September 22, with free one-hour coaching clinics at 9am and 11am, demonstration riding, open riding and an official opening at 12.30pm.
