High five for a cool skate park

CROYDON Y Space, site of the revamped Croydon skate park, has been named the best designed playspace in Victoria and Tasmania.

The Parks and Leisure Australia award capped off the successful completion of the project, which officially opened in March.

The venue includes a floodlit skate park as well as areas for volleyball, table tennis and stage shows. Skate shop manager Vivienne Koomen said skaters were impressed with the new layout.

"All the feedback we've had has been awesome," she said.

"The design is very flowing, and has several different obstacles, each of which are progressively challenging for all skill levels."

Before the skate park was built, the Maroondah Council sent out surveys that asked youngsters what they wanted to see in the new park.

"It's a credit to the council for listening to what skaters actually wanted," Mrs Koomen said.

Mayor Rob Steane said the council was pleased with the popularity of the new park.

"Whether you travel past Y Space on a weeknight or weekend, there are always people of all ages and abilities riding skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes," Cr Steane said.

The $616,000 project is now a finalist in the national awards, which will be announced at the PLA National Conference in Newcastle later this month.
