Stellar performer: Croydon’s Natasha Bassett, middle, will relish her main role in the musical All Shook Up!.
SEASONED local actress Natasha Bassett will put 20 years of theatre experience to good use when she stars in an Elvis Presley-inspired musical at the National Theatre.
All Shook Up! takes a nostalgic trip back to an era where slick-haired, hip-swivelling suave bikers wore leather jackets to impress potential partners.
"It's a high-energy dancing musical — a made-up story around the legend of Elvis," says Bassett, a Croydon resident.
"I play a honky-tonk [lower class bar] owner, and act alongside some very impressive young talent."
The musical, by the CLOC Musical Theatre, is set in the 1950s and features almost 30 of the king of rock 'n' roll's biggest hits woven into a story of mistaken identity, mixed-up romance and true love.
"I get to sing one of Elvis's great ballads, There's Always Me, and also be a part of a number of other well known Elvis songs," Bassett says.
"Not only that, but I end up falling in love and being one of several couples who get married in a big wedding finale, which is great fun."
Bassett, who makes her CLOC debut, works as a marketing and box office manager in her day job, meaning she is constantly involved within the performing business.
She admits that at times like these before a major performance, combining a hobby with your career can be challenging.
"It can be a bit tricky before the show starts and you're rocking up to work with mascara smeared over your face, but people are generally understanding," she says.
However, the dancing — an integral part of any Elvis-inspired musical — does not come naturally to Bassett.
"I can't really dance. I think I'm in one number," she says with a laugh.
"I'm primarily a singing actor, so I try and stick to that."
