Dive into the murky waters
that make up the exciting new touring exhibition, Yarra: Morgues, Murder and Mayhem, which has arrived in the Yarra
Ranges from the Victoria Police Museum.
The exhibition opened over the weekend and peers into the depths of the Yarra River's past.
The exhibition gives a snapshot of the different lives lived on the river's banks and reveals the diversity of events and uses that have shaped the famous waterway.
Exhibition visitors can explore
and discover quirky and unusual
stories about the Yarra River like
how a linguistic bungle led to
the naming of the Yarra, how
Yankee Jim kept his discovery
of gold in the Upper Yarra a secret, or why police decided to preserve the head of a murdered woman in a jar
in 1898.
"Our team here have added a
section to the exhibition about the Upper Yarra, to make it interesting for our local visitors and to tell some of the stories from this region," museum curator Megan Sheehy said.
"Gathered from the regional museum archives and in collaboration with several local historical societies, these stories bring local characters to life."Yarra: Morgues, Murder and
Mayhem runs until December 9. Admission is free. Yarra Ranges Regional Museum is at 35-37
