Mt Evelyn takes overtime netball win

MOUNT Evelyn returned to the summit of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Netball Association winning the A grade premiership at Healesville on Saturday.

After losing last year's decider, Mt Evelyn was desperate to get back on top this year but needed overtime to beat Wandin in the grand final, winning 52-50.

The win was Mt Evelyn's fourth premiership in five years while the club's B grade and B reserve grade sides also won their respective grand finals on Saturday while the A reserves fell just short.

A grade side co-captain Lauren Tesoriero said her side had to battle to beat Wandin. "Neither team could get a lead on the other, it was just back and forth the whole game," she said. "We didn't get our lead over them until the final two minutes of overtime. Before then it was just neck and neck."

Centre Gaby Duncan was named best player for her efforts in playing the whole match at centre while Tesoriero in wing defence, Shannon Gray at goal shooter, Kate Youlten at goal keeper, Ella Priestley at wing attack and Sarah Hogan goal attack all played key roles.

Gray and Hogan shot 24 goals each while Rachael Hickey scored four goals. Tesoriero said the day as a whole was very rewarding for the club.

"Everyone is very close throughout the club," she said. "We certainly worked hard for the whole year and are a good bunch of friends who love playing together. It was a nice reward for our hard work."

Mount Evelyn has named Brian Chamberlin as senior football coach for the 2013 YVMDFL season. Chamberlin, a long-time Eastern Football League player, replaces Chris Murphy.
