A CHEMICAL smell lingering in the air around Healesville should not cause alarm and is not a danger to anyone in the area.
Locals reported to the CFA this morning a gas-like smell coming from the the site of a former industrial laundry that was destroyed by fire in July.
A CFA spokeswoman said excavators disturbed some soil on the Maroondah Highway site, causing a smell.
The CFA has confirmed the chemical level is ‘‘safe’’ and will continue to use air-monitoring equipment on the site.
