BIKE riders could play an integral part in pedalling votes for Maroondah election candidates, says an advocacy group.
Bicycle Network Victoria is encouraging candidates to recognise the growing population of bike riders and the votes they represent by pledging their support for better facilities across the municipality.
As part of its push, the organisation has launched Votebike - an online system that allows candidates to present their policies to bike riders in the electoral area.
The organisation says it has no political affiliation and simply wants its members to be aware of what each councillor's stance is.
There are a number of bike-related issues in Maroondah that need to be addressed, the organisation says.
Bicycle Network Victoria wants Maroondah Council to increase its spending on cycling facilities.
One of the group's key considerations is the Bicycle Expenditure Index — how much the council spends per person in the area on cycling-related projects and investment.
In 2011, the council spent $200,000 on these issues, which equates to $1.87 for each person — but according to the network's figures the average in neighbouring councils was $6.
The organisation also wants the Ringwood to Notting Hill Pipe Track built, which, it believes, will fix congestion in areas where there are minimal alternatives for commuters. Another initiative it is campaigning for is the O'Shannasy Viaduct Trail to link the Mitcham-to-Syndal water pipe track to Ringwood and out through Croydon and Kilsyth through to the Lilydale-Warburton Rail Trail in Mt Evelyn.
Bicycle Network Victoria CEO Harry Barber said riders were eager to assess candidates for their attitude and policy solutions in this area.
