MOOROOLBARK College principal Simon Reid says students being evacuated from a camping trip in the Alpine National Park were ‘‘in good spirits’’, despite the drama.
Eleven students and 3 staff members from the college were continuing to be evacuated from the peaks of the national park in Gippsland this morning after two students experienced symptoms of mild hypothermia yesterday.
Mr Reid described one of the students who had to be evacuated as the "last person you would expect to experience hypothermia".
Mooroolbark College had taken the students on a two-day camping trip as part of their outdoor education program. It is believed they were staying in tents that were capable of withstanding more severe weather conditions.
The students had earlier made a 13-kilometre trek to a lookout and had arrived back at their base camp near Lake Tali Karng when some of the students became very cold after a sudden change in weather.
The teachers used a satellite telephone to contact the SES when it was judged the students had become too ill to remain at the base camp.
"This is a one-off experience that was handled well because of the procedures we had put in place. All students are in good spirits and are well and healthy," Mr Reid said.
