Lilydale TAFE: Fun night not so trivial

STUDENTS and staff of the soon-to-close Swinburne University Lilydale TAFE campus are organising a trivia night to raise funds for their campaign to try to save their campus.

The Save Our Swinburne community lobby group formed soon after the announcement that the university would be shutting the campus's doors.

The group is angry about the closure, staff job losses and the dearth of educational opportunities for young people in the area.

Luke Stafford, of Mooroolbark, is studying for a diploma of conservation and land management — a course which will be shortened from two years to one and a half years.

"We're going to miss out on field trips and there will be different staff," he said.

Linda Cargill, of the National Tertiary Education Union, said some disabled students at the institution may not be able to make the shift to other campuses.

The trivia night is this Friday at The Atrium room of the Swinburne campus. More than 150 people are expected to attend. Prizes have been donated by local businesses. A Christmas hamper will be the main raffle prize. —Patrick Hutchens
