RDCA: Age no barrier to Wolves

IT was on for young and old, literally, for Montrose in the opening round of the RDCA Wilkins Cup on Saturday.

Wolves' 45-year-old batsman Andy Mirams made 126 before his side declared for 6-275 at tea.

In the last session, Wolves captain-coach Daniel Carratelli threw caution to the wind with 17-year-old fast bowlers Cheyne Van Koll and Jake Crowe leading the attack against Wonga Park, bowling them out for 73.

Carratelli said his side had done well to beat Wonga Park.

"Wonga Park is just down from the top grade and will be a pretty dangerous side," he said.

"Van Koll took six of the first seven wickets and Crowe took a couple of wickets, too.

"But even though we ripped through them later on, we gave away a few too many runs early in the innings. Wonga was about 1-32 from the first six overs as there were a few gaps in the field."

Carratelli said his bowlers had done well to dismiss Nick Chamberlain and John Taylor.

"We knew if we could get those two cheaply then we would be a chance," he said.

"Van Koll has a bit of pace for a 17 year old and moves it both ways. He is a good, modest kid."

The Wolves needed to take only nine wickets, as a Wonga player had left for overseas during the week.

Carratelli said his side wouldn't get too carried away with its win as it faces a tough Kilsyth team this round.

"We are away to Kilsyth and they have five or six very experienced and talented cricketers," he said.

"So even though we won, we won't be getting too excited as there are some tough games to come."
