MORE than 50 unregistered weapons have been handed in to Maroondah police during this month's firearms amnesty.
Victoria Police has called on people to hand in weapons throughout October, but Ringwood police's property manager Gaye Bobbine says they'll accept them at any time.
A batch of weapons including guns, knives and machetes was destroyed on October 22 and many more are expected to be handed in in the next few days.
Ms Bobbine said a lot of people might have kept relatives' old guns.
"One man received a gun in the 1960s as part payment for a job and had later forgotten about it. Another man had a sword hanging on the wall of his bedroom for 20-something years."
It is illegal to possess a sword in Victoria unless an owner is registered with a collectors' club.
